This Old Chair

This old chair, torn and tattered holds stories untold about life shattered.

Much like a person, with scars inside, down in its heart, they can not hide.
Once its uncovered, some stories unfold; about a family who means much more than gold.
Oh if this chair could only talk, it would shed light on the answers to the mystery’s I’ve sought.
It would share stories of life and stories of death. For Its witnessed both and all in between. How I long to hear all that it’s seen.
Much like a person, thats had a long life. It’s seen sharing, loving, conflict and strife.
And much like our Lord who shelters us in his arms. So does this chair; hold its person from harm.
How much longer can this chair last? How much more family will it see and add to its past?
This chair represents eternity given through Christ. Showing the holes of nails from its life.
How many more times can this chair be recovered and still remain strong to securely protect the one that it hovers.
How many more times can we be forgiven? As Christ with his nail holes has now risen.
Just as the chair is continually recovered- so are we, through the one who gave all; both, hold us up loving between their arms to protect from a fall.
As the chair is recovered, hiding the stories from the past: Christ‘s blood cleanses us and gives life that will last.
Yet unlike the chair, who hides all the past. Our sins are washed clean and have all been cast.

No hiding our scars now for that life is gone. A New life has been given with hope as we move on.

This old chair belonged to my great grandmother. It’s at the very least, 100 years old. It has literally witnessed new Life as someone most likely say there a waiting for the birth of my mother or in the home. It has been there to witness the death of my great grandmother and also the death of my mom. It has live through fI’ve generations of our family. My great grandmother made drapes for Waldrops and likely recovered it. IF she bought it new. My grandmother was an excellent seamstress and she likely recovered it as the passing of my great grandmother at some point. My dad was the last one to recover it. And so, with the death of my mom, I have decided to try to breath new life into this old chair. it was emotionally difficult to strip away all the work my dad had done. But I felt a responsibility to try to preserve the life of this old chair and make it become a large part of our family life in our home now that mom has passed.

Upon removing the outside of the chair, I had no idea that the inside was in such bad shape. My plans were to strip and refinish the wood anyway, so I decided to varnish the wood on the inside of the chair in hopes to provide a preservative and added strength. Which, it did seem to help. Brand new foam cushions, wrapped to the chair in cotton batting and a little extra stuffing to rround Out the corners with a polyester fiber fill.

Excuse all the errors as i type on my phone, which is refusing to scroll properly where I can see what I’m typing and also making it where I’m unable to correct anything.

Once the insides were replaced and the wood was refinished, then the most difficult work of all began. The outside of this chair is extremely difficult to recover. You don’t know whether to wrap around the arms or leave the wood exposed. Going by the shape of the wood- I used the nail holes as my answer and covered the wood as an enclosed back. The. I chose to go a different router than my dad had chosen and decided to leave as much of the arm open as possible. It’s not a professional job, but then this is my first time to undertake this type of project. Although I’m disappointed in the quality of my work, I’m also filled with a sense of satisfaction knowing that the chair is better than it was And will be given a permanent home to be passed down to further generations and gain more stories to add to its past.

I love looking at history and the stories from the pas
